Workplace Wellness - Staying Hydrated

We all know that the body is made up of 50-75% water. It’s a fact you learn when you’re young. But did you also know that you lose between 2.5 to 3 litres of water per day? This is increased when it is warm or you’re doing exercise. Being dehydrated, even by 1%, can increase our tiredness, cause headaches and make it difficult to concentrate. All things that make it harder to perform our jobs well.

So, to keep your workplace running with better hydration, we’ve compiled some tips that may help:

·       Carry a reusable water bottle with you – having water on hand makes it easier to top up when you’re feeling thirsty. A reusable bottle also helps reduce plastic wastage. It can also help you track your water intake. If you have a 500ml bottle, you need to drink at least 4 a day to meet the recommended amount.

·       If you’re a lover of fizzy drinks, you can try and replace them with sparkling water – sparkling water will give you all the same hydration benefits, but with that extra effervescent kick you love.

·       This may sound a bit extreme, but you can set up reminders on your phone, or download a tracking app – if you find it hard to remember to drink, setting up reminders may help.

·       Coffee, tea, milk and juice all count – obviously, you shouldn’t replace all your water content with coffee (or you may be bouncing off the walls) but having a few coffees in the morning, or a cuppa before bed can be beneficial.

·       If you struggle to stay hydrated at work, you could set up a hydration station or coffee corner - This will not only help you increase your liquid intake but will help boost team morale.

Remember, hydration isn't just a suggestion; it's essential for overall health and well being. Whether you're at the gym or in the office, prioritising hydration is key for peak performance. So, keep that water bottle handy and stay hydrated to feel your best every day.
